What is an Inpatient Drug Rehab?

The ultimate goal of inpatient drug rehabilitation is long-term abstinence from drugs.  Those individuals who enter into inpatient drug rehabilitation learn new tools for use when they reenter society and learn to lead responsible, successful drug free lives.

Inpatient drug rehabilitation requires that clients live on-site at the rehab center.  The length of stay will depend on the needs of the individual requiring treatment.  Most inpatient drug rehab centers service men and women and have a dorm-like atmosphere.  Care is provided to the clients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Selecting an inpatient drug rehabilitation center is not an easy task.  Many people do not know what to look for in seeking addiction treatment.  It is important to know that not all inpatient drug rehabilitation centers are alike.  Each inpatient drug rehabilitation program has its own program options, staff qualifications, credentials, cost and effectiveness rate. The goal is to find a drug rehabilitation center that will best suit your needs.  Before you make your final decision on which inpatient drug rehabilitation program is best for you, you may want to consider the following:

Does your inpatient drug rehabilitation program offer a variety of programs?

A good drug rehabilitation center should offer a variety of treatment programs that meet every individuals need.  Inpatient services are typically provided by a licensed hospital or addiction recovery center while most residential treatment programs do not have the same stringent requirements or rigorous standards of medical care.  The length of stay in this program usually depends on the severity and stage of the drug addiction.

How much does your drug rehabilitation center cost?

With or without insurance, inpatient drug rehabilitation can be very costly, although well worth the amount of money spent.  You will want to inquire as to whether the drug rehabilitation center accepts your insurance and how much of the cost your insurance will cover.  If you do not have insurance, you will want to inquire about financing options and be sure to get the total amount up front—be sure there are no hidden costs.  You will need to know what is included in the cost, & what will be added (if anything) to your bill as a fee-for-service program, etc.  Some programs will charge more for difficult detox and withdrawal, such as alcohol and heroin. Although cost is a consideration, do not use a program’s cost as your ultimate deciding factor.  Be sure that the inpatient drug rehab center will suit all of your needs first, then decide on the cost.  The goal is quality, not quantity.

Is your inpatient drug rehabilitation program medically based?

If the answer is yes, this means that you will have physicians and nurses available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure that you have a safe detox and withdrawal from drugs in your treatment program.  Medical staff will oversee your progress and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan as needed.  Be sure to inquire about the facility’s credentials and accreditation and that they meet the nation standards for providing quality medical care.

What is the degree of family involvement in the treatment program?

Family involvement is a very important aspect of the addiction recovery process that is often overlooked by the individual suffering from an addiction.  Be sure that the program you choose includes your family members in your recovery process via family programs, educational seminars and group therapy.

Does your inpatient drug rehabilitation program include a continuing care program/after-care program?

Be sure to choose an inpatient drug rehabilitation center that offers a quality, continuing care program in which services continue after you have been released from treatment.  A quality program will offer continuing educational opportunities, therapy when needed, group therapy as needed and follow-up monitoring of your recovery by a recovery specialist.
